The Honorable George H.W. Bush
D-20000
HONORARY CHAIRMAN
“[Skydiving] is the most exciting thing I have done, next to being President of the United States.”
George Herbert Walker Bush was a World War II veteran who served as the 43rd Vice President of the United States from 1981 to 1989, and was the 41st President of the United States, serving 1989 to 1993.
The former President made his first parachute jump while serving in the United States Navy. His plane was shot down during a bombing mission in 1944, causing him to bail out over the Pacific at 1,500 feet. His two crewmates did not survive.
In 1997, Bush fulfilled a personal promise that one day he would jump from a plane for fun. He jumped over Yuma, AZ, as part of an Army demonstration. Two years later, he jumped again for his 75th birthday, beginning his tradition of making a birthday skydive every five years.
On June 12, 2014, on his 90th birthday, Bush made his final skydive. He died in 2018 at age 94.
Although not Trustees or Officers for voting purposes, an honorary chairman and/or an honorary president may be selected by the Board of Trustees in furtherance of the purpose of the International Skydiving Museum & Hall of Fame’s objectives and in recognition of service and commitment to its goals.
