John LeBlanc
John LeBlanc made his first jump in December 1977 at the age of 16, a static-line exit from a UH-1H Huey helicopter in the Panama Canal Zone. It was the beginning of a lifelong pursuit that would carry him from a military base jump club to the center of one of the most consequential partnerships in the history of parachute manufacturing.
LeBlanc met Bill Coe in 1979 at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University while earning his Bachelor of Science, and joined him at Performance Designs in 1984. What followed was more than four decades of research, development, and design work that fundamentally changed what skydivers fly and how those canopies perform. Together, Coe and LeBlanc drove the development of Microline, cross-bracing, and zero porosity fabric, technologies that are now standard across the parachute industry worldwide.
The canopies LeBlanc helped bring to market did not merely fill a product catalog. They redefined what was possible. In 1985, Performance Designs produced the first tandem-specific canopies for Relative Workshop, a contribution that supported the early growth of tandem skydiving as a training method. In 1988, LeBlanc built and test jumped the first sub-100 square foot canopy, work that led directly to the development of internal cross-bracing, a technology still in widespread use throughout the industry today. In 1990, after years of development under his leadership, Performance Designs released the original Sabre. It became the best-selling sport main canopy in the company’s history, its product code “LS” a permanent acknowledgment of its origins.
That same year, the Lightning transformed canopy relative work, enabling progressively larger and more complex formations and contributing to the 100-way world record in 2007. The Stiletto arrived in 1992 as the first PD canopy with tapered wingtips, and the Velocity in 1998 became the dominant choice for competitive canopy pilots, accumulating more competition wins than any other canopy on the market at the time. The Navigator, also released in 1998, addressed a different need entirely: a canopy designed specifically to bridge the gap between student gear and the high-performance designs modern skydivers eventually fly.
Across these decades of design work, LeBlanc made a consistent contribution to how the skydiving community understands the tools it flies. Active in PIA for several years, he served as PIA Technical Committee Chairman, during which time he gained PIA support for further research and testing of ram-air canopy deployments, expanding on earlier work that included tests of simultaneous and near-simultaneous deployments of the main and reserve using a specially configured rig, performing many of those test jumps himself. He also supported the successful proposal to change the repack cycle from 120 to 180 days, which with help from the rigging committee was approved by the FAA.
His writing on wing loading and high-performance canopy flight, published in Parachutist magazine and referenced broadly across the industry, helped establish a shared language for canopy safety and education that influenced instructors and skydivers worldwide. During a period when high-performance canopy flight was poorly understood and politically contentious within the sport, LeBlanc was a steady voice for education and personal responsibility, helping create the conditions in which canopy piloting could eventually be recognized as a legitimate discipline rather than dismissed outright.
Performance Designs began on a porch in DeLand with two people and a shared conviction that parachute design could be better. Under LeBlanc’s leadership as Vice President, it grew into an organization employing hundreds and building approximately 150 prototype parachutes per year, a sustained commitment to research and development that reflects the same philosophy that has guided his career from the beginning. He has accumulated more than 5,500 jumps and remains an active pilot, regularly flying experimental and antique aircraft.
John LeBlanc’s induction into the International Skydiving Museum & Hall of Fame recognizes a body of work that has shaped the design, safety, and performance of parachutes flown by skydivers at every level around the world. The canopies that carry his influence are not historical artifacts. They are in the air today.
