Jim Cowan

James “Jim” Cowan is a second-generation skydiver, elite competitor, instructor, and leader whose influence on the sport has spanned more than four decades. With over 25,000 jumps and a lifetime dedicated to safety, mentorship, competition, and service, Jim’s legacy is rooted in deep family tradition and exceptional commitment to the parachuting community.
Raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Jim was born into a skydiving family. His parents and uncles were deeply involved in the sport—as competitors, instructor examiners, riggers, and pilots. His uncle, Bob Cowan, was a freefall photography pioneer whose imagery graced the cover of Parachutist Magazine and even appeared in Sunday newspapers nationwide. Jim began packing round parachutes at age 10, learning the ropes at his family’s drop zone before making his first jump at 16 in 1978.
A year later, he soloed an aircraft at 17, and soon after partnered with a jump club to purchase a Cessna 182. By 18, he had earned his jumpmaster rating, started instructing students, and completed his first night stadium demo jump—into a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game, no less. That same year, he performed his first fixed-object night jump off a tower in 1980.
From 1993 to 2003, Jim co-owned and operated Quantum Leap Skydiving Center in Sullivan, Missouri—a twin turbine, multi-aircraft operation known for high standards in safety, instruction, and competition. During this period, he trained more than 25,000 students and developed custom training curricula for a wide range of needs, including sport and military tandem, AFF, ram-air static line progressions, competition canopy formation teams as well as demonstration jumping.
Jim is a founding member of the Quantum Leap Canopy Formation Team, which dominated the competitive landscape for over two decades. As a member of Quantum Leap and Clean Air, he represented the U.S. at eight World Championships and one World Cup, bringing home 4 gold, 4 silver, and 1 bronze medal, alongside 25 national gold medals across nine U.S. National Championships. In the process, he set and broke nine world competition records and participated in six world record canopy formations, from the early 49-way to the current 100-way.
A true authority on canopy formation, Jim has safely disengaged from well over 300 canopy entanglements, including 140 incidents requiring at least one jumper to cut away. He has personally cut away from entanglements 15 times, and performed more than 50 intentional cutaways for training and malfunction video production.
Jim’s service to the sport extends beyond competition. He has been a USPA Safety and Training Advisor, Tandem and Static Line Examiner, AFF Instructor, FAA Rigger Technician, and USHPA P3-rated paraglider pilot. He has completed over 1,200 professional stadium jumps and hundreds of charity demonstration jumps, making him one of the sport’s most prolific ambassadors. His demonstration expertise led to training roles with the U.S. Air Force Academy and the Navy Parachute Team (Leap Frogs), where he taught junior members how to execute safe and professional demo jumps.
In the military sector, Jim’s contributions are equally remarkable. He served as an instructor and rigger for the Naval Freefall Parachutist Course, safety officer and rigger for the Leap Frogs, and co-developer of the Marine Corps Multi-Mission Parachutist Course, which set a high safety and capability standard for U.S. special operations. As the general manager and developer of a tactical training facility in Arizona, Jim was responsible for developing programs of instruction for multiple U.S. and other military organizations, search and rescue groups, smoke jumpers, and multiple government agencies for nearly a decade. Since then, he has instructed dozens of U.S. and international military units through the Flight-1 Military and Sport Canopy Programs.
Despite his vast experience, Jim remains humble about his qualifications:
“I’m definitely not an authority on these subjects, but I have put a lot of time and effort into studying them—with some practical exams that I ultimately passed by surviving just over 25,000 jumps and 47 years of skydiving development!”
Through every role—competitor, instructor, drop zone owner, military advisor, and mentor—Jim Cowan has elevated the sport of skydiving with integrity, professionalism, and passion. His induction into the International Skydiving Hall of Fame honors a life committed to the highest standards of skydiving excellence.
