Bill Wenger

Fredrick William “Bill” Wenger has devoted over five decades to advancing the sport of skydiving—as a competitor, coach, rigger, pilot, meet director, and leader. With more than 10,000 jumps and a resume of achievement that spans competition, safety, governance, and mentorship, Bill has helped define the modern skydiving experience.
His skydiving journey began in 1971, and by the late 1970s, he had become a core member of the U.S. Army Parachute Team (Golden Knights). As a member of the Golden Knights’ first 8-way formation skydiving team, Bill helped the team win gold at the 1978 World Cup in France. That same year, he was named the 1979 Golden Knight of the Year—a prestigious honor recognizing his excellence and leadership on the team. He also earned individual gold in accuracy at the 1976 World Military (CISM) Championships and went on to hold 10 world records in formation and accuracy events.
Over the course of his career, Bill has proven to be one of the most influential coaches in collegiate skydiving. As the longtime head coach of the U.S. Air Force Academy Parachute Team, he led the program to a record-setting 19 National Collegiate Championships, training more than 397 individual champions and overseeing the accumulation of more than 1,000 medals. His leadership helped shape the careers of countless skydivers—many of whom remain in the sport as athletes, instructors, and leaders.
Bill’s legacy also includes critical leadership in the sport’s organizational structure. He served 12 years on the USPA Board of Directors, chairing key committees such as Competition, Regional Directors, and Nominations & Elections. He helped usher in the inclusion of Canopy Formation, Freefly, and 6-way Speed at the Collegiate Nationals, and authored the nationals bid process that remains in place today. He also helped establish the first national records for wingsuit competitions.
As a meet organizer and director, Bill has overseen more than 25 U.S. National Championships and served as Meet Director for the 2016 FAI Mondial World Skydiving Championships at Skydive Chicago—an event that hosted over 750 competitors from 38 countries in six skydiving disciplines. His ability to deliver safe, professional, and seamless competition experiences has earned him the respect of athletes and officials worldwide.
A champion of training, safety, and technical excellence, Bill is a FAA Master Parachute Rigger and spent five years instructing at the U.S. Academy of Parachute Rigging, followed by a decade as a Designated Parachute Rigger Examiner (DPRE) in Colorado. He also holds multiple aviation ratings and has logged more than 2,000 flight hours flying skydivers and demonstration teams.
Bill led the U.S. Air Force Academy Demonstration Team for 18 years, coordinating and training for over 400 successful public demonstration jumps. His guidance emphasized precision landings, safety under pressure, and meaningful crowd engagement—building public trust in the professionalism of military and civilian skydivers alike.
In 2003, Bill was honored with the USPA Gold Medal for Meritorious Service, recognizing more than 30 years of leadership, competition excellence, and dedication to the betterment of the sport.
The induction of Fredrick William “Bill” Wenger into the International Skydiving Hall of Fame is a fitting tribute to a life spent building, shaping, and serving the skydiving community. His legacy continues through every student he has mentored, every event he has elevated, and every record-setting jump that carries his influence.
