Alan Eustace
Alan Eustace, a former Senior Vice President of Engineering at Google, is renowned for his extraordinary parachuting achievements and his innovative contributions to high-altitude skydiving. Born in 1957, Eustace embodies the spirit of adventure, combining logistical expertise, scientific knowledge, and a daring nature to achieve remarkable feats in the world of skydiving.
Early Skydiving Career:
Eustace’s passion for aviation and skydiving began in his youth. He made his first skydive in 1975 at Paragators in Florida, alongside his best friend David. Despite taking a break from the sport in 1981 to pursue fixed-wing flying, Eustace’s love for skydiving was rekindled in the mid-2000s when he took on the challenge of skydiving from a Gulfstream G550 jet.
World Record Jump:
On October 24, 2014, Alan Eustace set a new world record for the highest-altitude free-fall jump, reaching 135,889 feet (41,419 meters). Ascending with a high-altitude helium balloon, Eustace released from the balloon at the edge of space, free-falling at speeds of 822 miles per hour and breaking the sound barrier. His jump set records for both the highest free-fall jump and the greatest free-fall distance.
StratEx Project:
Eustace’s record-breaking jump was the result of the StratEx project, a self-funded initiative aimed at exploring the stratosphere using a scuba-diving-style pressure suit. The project involved significant technological advancements, including methods for safe drogue chute deployment, flat spin prevention, and managing heat and moisture in the pressure suit. These innovations have contributed to advancements in high-altitude skydiving and commercial space travel.
Continuing Legacy:
After retiring from Google, Eustace continues to skydive and fly various aircraft. He remains involved in significant projects, including efforts in the energy sector, electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles, and healthcare. His passion for aviation and skydiving endures, and he remains an active and influential member of the skydiving community.
